David F. Hunter
June 5, 1941 – July 18, 2024
David F. Hunter, 83, of Brighton, Michigan, passed away on July 18, 2024, after a long battle with cancer.
Born on June 5, 1941, to Glen and Alberta Hunter in Stephenson, Michigan, David graduated from high school in Newberry and went on to earn a degree from Northern Michigan University. He dedicated 36 years to teaching science. He retired from Troy High School, where he also coached various sports.
David is survived by his loving wife, Susan May, and his children, Daniel (Nicole) Hunter and Sarah (Josh Foeller) Hunter. He was a proud grandfather to Macie, Max, John David, Morgan, and Jane. He also leaves behind his siblings, Jerry (Gig) Hunter, Jill Hunter, and Jane (Tom) Joynt, as well as two step-siblings, Marvin and Angel.
David’s love for nature was evident through his passion for photography, capturing the beauty of North America for over 40 years while traveling by motorcycle with a close friend. His stunning works were displayed at numerous art shows across the Metro Detroit area. Besides his talent behind the camera, David was an avid woodworker, creating projects that ranged from benches to Tiki bars.
In honor of his memory, donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
David was loved and admired by many, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Karen Lynn Obey
August 4, 1952 – July 22, 2024
Karen Lynn Obey, 71, of Portage Township, died Monday evening July 22, 2024 at her residence surrounded by her loving family, her faithful Shih-Tzu Samantha Ann “Sammy” and the care of Schoolcraft Memorial Healthcare and Hospice. Karen was born August 4, 1952 in Brimley, daughter of the late Oren and Ida (Hoskey) Burton,
Karen enjoying spending time with her family, attending her grandson’s football games and granddaughter’s cross country meets, card games, dice, an occasional trip to the casino, fishing, bowling and working with stained glass and ceramics.
In addition to her parents, Karen is preceded in death by her son Michael William Obey, brothers Tim Burton and Roger Burton, sisters Caroline Burton, Donna Jean Clark and Laurie Bergman; father and mother-in-law William (Billie) Obey.
Survivors include her loving husband, Larry, of Portage Township; son David Joseph (Penny) Obey of Newberry; grandson Bill Obey and granddaughter Grace Obey; siblings Oren (Barbara) Burton of Washington and Gerald Burton of Brimley; favorite cousin Katie Sparks; many more nieces, nephews and cousins.
Per request, cremation services were accorded with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.

Delores Marie Smith
April 27, 1936 – July 23, 2024
Longtime Newberry resident, Delores Marie Smith, 88, died Tuesday morning July 23, 2024 at her residence in the presence of her loving family and the care of Schoolcraft Memorial Homecare and Hospice.
Born April 27, 1936 in Boyne City, daughter of the late Leslie and Pauline (Keltz) Eddy, Marie was a 1954 graduate of Newberry High School and, on May 17, 1958, Marie married Tommy R. Smith in St. Charles, Missouri.
Marie was formerly employed at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital as a ward clerk and a respiratory therapist. She would later continue employment as a life skills instructor for Pathways in Newberry and Alpha Life Skills in Sault Ste. Marie until her retirement.
Marie was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and former EMT for the Luce County Ambulance Corp. Marie enjoyed camping and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Marie is preceded in death by her husband Tommy on November 12, 2013; siblings Kimball Eddy, Robert Eddy, Joan Carlson, Barbara Simmons and Sally Burke.
Survivors include her loving daughters Barbara Taylor of Newberry, Alisa Smith of Newberry and Regina Vix of Perronville; grandchildren Jill (Vince) Randazzo, Brandon Lipponen, Andrew Schultz, Carly (Brian) Dubay, Christopher Taylor and Matthew Taylor; great-grandchildren Carter, Emma, Aubree, Malena, McKenzie, Avery, Landon, Jordy, Ivy, Hadley with one to be expected; sister Judy Stucke of Lomira, Wisconsin; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Donna Lee Collins
January 27, 1938 – July 22, 2024
Longtime Newberry resident, Donna Lee Collins, 86, died Monday evening July 22, 2024 at Golden Leaves Living Center.
Born January 27, 1938 in Detroit, daughter of the late William and Sarah Mae (Frasier) Atnip, Donna was a 1956 graduate of Midland High School and a 1959 graduate of the Saginaw General Hospital School of Nursing obtaining certification as a Registered Nurse.
On December 19, 1959, Donna married Harry “Soupy” Collins and made Newberry their home. Donna was employed as an RN at the Newberry Regional Mental Health Center for 30 years until her retirement.
Donna served as an EMT, instructor and board member of the Luce County Ambulance Corp., member of the Newberry Community Chorus, member of the First Presbyterian Church Choir and the Red Hats Society.
In addition to her parents, Donna is preceded in death by her husband Soupy on June 2, 2011, infant daughter Shannon Dee Collins, daughter Lorri “Jamie” Clay, grandson Micheal John Jago II and sisters Geneva Coad, Dorothy Seymour, Verda Johnson and Billie Thomas.
Survivors include her loving children Becki (Mike) Jago of Newberry, Pennye (Paul Stimac) Hinz of Newberry, Melissa (Rich) Longcore of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Harry (Yvonne) Collins II, John (Michelle) Collins of Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Kendra (Neil Deichman) Collins of Lansing; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Per request, cremation services were accorded. A memorial service celebrating the life of Donna will take place Monday July 29, 2024 at 1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Newberry with Pastor Jon Michael officiating. Donna and Soupy will be laid to rest at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry at a later date.

William Robert Lane
September 25, 1930 – July 23, 2024
Dr. William Robert Lane, 93, former minister (Ret.) of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry, died Tuesday morning July 23, 2024 at his residence in the presence of his loving family and the care of North Woods Hospice.
Born September 25, 1930 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, son of the late Earnest and Rhonda (Tree) Lane, Bill received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Clarkston University, Master’s in Divinity from Western Seminary in Pittsburgh and a PHD in Semantical Linguistics from John Hopkins University.
Dr. Lane served as a minister in Gloversville, New York, Harold Harbor, Maryland, Corsica, Pennsylvania and New Brighton, Pennsylvania. He also taught the Old Testament at Princeton and at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Dr. Lane eventually moved to Newberry, serving as Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church, retiring as Pastor Emeritus.
Dr. Lane served as state of clerk for Presbytery of Mackinaw and filled in for a few churches in the Eastern Upper Peninsula in his later years. He also was owner/operator of Down Memory Lane Antiques.
Dr. Lane formerly served on three different fire departments prior to moving to Newberry. A resident of Newberry for over 46 years, Dr. Lane served as former chief and EMT for the Luce County Ambulance Corp., affiliate faculty for the Michigan Heart Association, treasurer for the Newberry Senior Citizens and Methodist men’s group, member and former president of the Newberry Kiwanis Club, treasurer for Habitat for Humanity, founder and member of the Luce County Fuel Fund, member of the Newberry Ministerial Association and merit badge advancement chairman for BSA Troop #124.
Survivors include his loving wife, the former Eleanor Burke, whom he married December 16, 1961 in Livingston, New Jersey; sons Bruce Lane of Newberry and Robert (Dianne) Lane Comstock Park; grandchildren Nathan Koster and Robyn Lane both of Grand Rapids, Tim Lane and Milo Naylon both of Redford Township.
Per request, cremation services were accorded. A gathering of family and friends will take place Wednesday July 31, 2024 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry. A memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Lane will follow at 11:00 am at the church with Pastor Melinda VanderSys officiating.
