9 14, 19 OBITUARIES Edmund Ahee: Jeweler's generosity aided charities BY M. L. ELRICK FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Edmund T. Ahee could afford to feast at the finest restaurants in the world, but he never forgot what it was like to go hungry. On Monday, three days after hosting the 18th annual Capuchin Souper Summer Celebration, Mr.

Ahee died at St. John Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was 77 and lived in Grosse Pointe Shores. "He be sorely missed because he was a good man," Edmund said Brother Ahee Vincent Reyes of Detroit's Ca- Edmund Ahee puchin mission, who also praised Mr. Ahee's family.

"Over the years they've been very, very generous, and they've worked very hard to help us care for the poor," Reyes said. "Their labors have meant that well over a million people have been fed because of their generosity." Mr. Ahee's son, John, estimated that Friday's benefit raised enough money to provide 500,000 more meals. As it has every year since the benefit began, Edmund T. Ahee Jewelers in Grosse Pointe Woods underwrote the event and provided more than $25,000 in jewelry as raffle prizes.

John Ahee said his father, who grew up near the Capuchin's original soup kitchen, "believed very strongly in that cause many of his friends actually stood in the line during the Depression." Edmund Ahee, too, knew hard times. He was 13 when his father died, forcing him to help support his family. His first job, at a grocery store, paid 11 cents an hour. Mr. Ahee typically put in 70-hour Richard Eckel Engineer was weather hobbyist Richard Paul Eckel of Grosse Pointe Park loved family, 1 the a water and thunderstorms.

Mr. Eckel arranged to spend his final days on Little Traverse Bay, where nature provided him one last cloudburst. Surrounded by family in a bay Richard view room at Northern Michigan Hospitals in Petoskey, Mr. Eckel died Sunday of congestive heart failure. He was 65.

"He enjoyed going up north and being by the water," said Richard daughter Susan Eckel Eckel, who said her father orchestrated his final week on the bay. "That's exactly where he wanted to be," she said. An engineer who fancied himself a pretty good amateur meteorologist, Mr. Eckel loved predicting the onset of storms and second-guessing the professionals, Susan Eckel said. He is also remembered for one of his favorite sayings: "Always remember: The most important gift in life is your family." A Wayne State University graduate, Mr.

Eckel was born in Hamtramck and grew up in the Grosse Pointes. He served as a sergeant in the Army before entering the steel industry. At the time of his death, he was a consultant to International Casting of New Baltimore. Survivors also include Mary Margaret, his wife of 39 years; daughters Elizabeth, Kathryn, Margaret Lujan and Ann; a grandson; his mother, and two brothers. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m.

But Mr. Ahee made that work to his advantage. Starting out in 1947 with a counter in his uncle's bowling alley at Harper and Van Dyke, Mr. Ahee began selling jewelry and household appliances. About 20 years later, he opened his shop on Mack in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Mr. Ahee worked in the shop six days a week until his death. He often worked alongside his seven children. His success allowed him to indulge a passion for philanthropy. Besides the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Mr.

Ahee contributed to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Channel 56's auction. He served on the Michigan Cancer Foundation board and received the Heart of Gold Award from the United Way. He was also a member of the Cardinals Club of the Detroit Archdiocese and an inductee of the International Hall of Fame at Cobo Hall.
