What do you use maple extract for? ›

In maple-flavored glazes, frostings, and other desserts, a teaspoon or two of maple extract adds full maple flavor. In recipes, it's often used in tandem with maple syrup, a larger amount of which adds subtler maple flavor, but also adds sugar and liquid.

The health-promoting effects of maple products included antioxidant, antimicrobial, antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative activities.

Maple Syrup

It is a natural sweetener made from the sap of maple trees, and it has a similar flavor to maple extract, although it is less concentrated. To substitute maple extract with maple syrup, use 1 teaspoon of maple syrup for every 1/2 teaspoon of maple extract called for in the recipe.

Caution: Since extracts contain alcohol, caution should be exercised when adding to very hot liquids, such as oil, or if added near an open flame.

And while maple syrup may have a lower glycemic index than table sugar, it still raises your blood sugar — albeit more slowly.

When does maple extract expire? Unopened, maple extract can last for several years and can be used well past its printed expiry date if it has been stored properly. Once opened, the extract typically remains good for about 4 years.

For example, maple syrup is lower in calories than honey, and therefore may be the better choice for someone looking to lose weight. Pure maple syrup also has fewer carbohydrates and is lower on the glycaemic index than honey, which may make it healthier for certain diets.

The study looked at how the molecule in maple syrup, quebecol, affected known substances in the human body that relate to inflammation. The experiments showed that quebecol was effective in preventing many of these substances from causing inflammation, further concluding that it is a great anti-inflammatory agent.

Maple extract – Use half as much maple extract as vanilla extract. This is a great substitute in pancakes, waffles, french toast, blondies, or oatmeal cookies. Almond extract – Use half as much almond extract as vanilla extract.
