It’s that time again. The seasons are about to change and before you know it you’ll be reaching for those chunky knits and pumpkin-spiced lattes. Clients will soon be ready to cool down their nail colour palettes and will be looking for your expertise on what’s hot in autumn nail art. We’re here to help you get ahead of the game on autumn nail trends so you’re stocked and ready for the season ahead. Here, we’ll outline some of our favourite gel and nail polish shades and nail art trends that are sure to be a hit in autumn and winter 2023.
Dark French Nails
Everyone loves French nail art. By simply swapping out the classic French White for a deeper tone, you’ve instantly turned a classic into an on-trend autumn winter vibe. Whether you choose a pure black, a warm chocolate brown, or opt for dark green French tip nails, using a dark shade nail polish or gel for your skinny dark French manicures is the perfect way to transition into autumn.
Tortie nails are here to stay and we couldn’t be happier. A firm favourite autumn and winter nail art design, tortoiseshell gel nails can be created by layering blooming dots of darker shades of black and brown between more sheer layers of orange or yellow. Chrome Nails
Thought we were done with nail chrome powder? Think again. While it’s been nearly a year since Hailey Beiber’s chrome nails catapulted chrome nail art back into the spotlight, this shimmering nail art trend is definitely still hot. In line with trends in nail art design for 2023, we’re seeing a shift away from perfectly polished chrome tip nails and a move towards a rougher, edgier feel. Think gunmetal grunge when creating textured silver chrome nails, or go full-on punk with black chrome nails. You can never go wrong with a chrombré effect, or you could even accent your looks with chrome French nail tips for just a hint of shimmer (can you tell we love a French?)
Cat Eye Nails
Feeling feline? Cat eye nail designs – or velvet nails – are a great way to create the illusion of texture. Shimmering cat eye nail polish or gel, like the fantastic Halo offering, react to magnetic exposure to create a mesmerising dual-toned effect that looks just like velvet! A super opulent look, this one is going to be huge for winter 2023 nail trends.
Latte Nails
After latte makeup made waves on TikTok earlier this year, it’s no wonder we’re seeing the emergence of latte nails. With a focus on warm brown tones to create a neutral aesthetic, the latte beauty trend gives nail techs the perfect transitional nail colour trend for autumn 2023. Get ready for lots of caramel, toffee, and chocolate – oh, and expect the same in nail colours too!

Milky Nails

Not everyone wants sparkly Christmas nails or wants to hop on dark nail trends. Whether you choose acrylic powders, gel polish, hard gel or builder gel to create the look, make sure your top coat is ultra-glossy to create that stunning sheer effect.
Mood Ring Nails
This is one of our favourite nail trends of 2023 for autumn. Also known as aura nails, mood ring nails are created using an airbrush gun to create radial ombré effects that look just like a mood ring colour change. “Subdued tones and earthy colours like browns, taupes, off whites, forest greens, grey toned blues, and burnt oranges will be popular,” says Michelle. “We're seeing lots of the colours of nature for autumn-winter: the deep reds, taupes, browns, blacks and dark blues.
Brown may be most commonly associated with autumnal color trends, but according to WGSN, it's set to trend throughout 2023. While golden butterscotch browns and soft desert-inspired tones will be big news later in the year, we're already seeing a lot of love for rich deep chocolatey shades.
This shape is a favorite of the year for a feminine look, says Nguyen. “Although not too long, these give a little extra length to your nail base,” she says. Gerstein agrees: “Whether the almond comes to a point or is a little round — it's the most requested shape right now."
Get ready for fall 2023 with trendy orange nails. Embrace the warm and vibrant hues of the season with captivating shades of brown, gold, and black. Keep it simple and chic with short almond-shaped nails or add a touch of elegance with a French tip.
Perhaps the biggest trend in 2024 was chrome nails, and that will continue into the next year. "It won't be a surprise to see chrome or metallic nails all over," says manicurist Hemi Park. Expect to see chrome finishes across a range of different colors — silver, gold, blue, and pink, to name a few.

While these red-and-green nails are unmistakably Christmas-themed, they're also not so obvious that you'll feel the need to scrub them off on December 26. Feel free to swap in shades or tones you prefer more, like a candy-cane red, a deep emerald green, or even a crisp, winter-y blue.
