Have you ever had a friend or customer ask you this very question: What hair colour suits me?

Chances are you’ve probably had your fair share of questions about this very subject!

But how do you advise someone you don’t know on something as personal and defining as their hair colour?

There’s plenty of pitfalls you wanna avoid, and we’ve got you covered – so read along for an in-depth guide. We’ll help you choose the best hair colour for you (or your client!).

By the end of this guide you should be able to pick out the right hair colour for you – which will enhance your natural beauty – andavoid a one-size-fits-all solution!

You can also use this guide to help your friend or salon customer. Helping a customer build their identity can truly be one of the most satisfying experiences as a hairdresser. And if you’re a salon owner this approach will be your key to long-term customer satisfaction!

The first two steps to the guide are all about skin colour, and undertones vs. overtones. The key to enhancing your natural beauty lies in matching your hair to fit your unique skin tone. This includes your undertone and overtone. Stay tuned!

Step 1: Skin Colour

For picking out the hair colours that suit you naturallyyou need to first think about skin tone. Do you have very light skin? Or maybe richly dark? Your skin colour has a great say on what hair colour suits you. You can see the skin colour chart to find the closest colour to your skin.

In general, darker skin tones are well-suited for dark hair colours, and lighter skin tones are best suited for lighter hair colours. We can’t deny the appeal of going against the rules sometimes, in which case you should read along for some valuable knowledge on skin tones, undertones and overtones.

Step 2: Skin Undertone vs. Skin Overtone

We’re talking undertones and overtones now. Your undertone lies underneath your skin, and is basically an indication for what shades of hair colour that suit you.

Your overtone however, is your surface colour, and this one can trick you into the wrong answer. See, you might think you have a warm undertone, because your surface colour is pink.

A pink overtone, is actually an exclusive overtone to cool undertones. The same goes for a yellow overtone, this one is exclusive to warm undertones. See the skin colour overview chart to find a colour that matches you.

So now let’s talk undertones. By examining the veins on your wrists you might find your skin undertone. There’s three different undertones: cool, warm and neutral. If your veins appear blue or purple that indicates a cool undertone, while green or cyan veins indicate a warm undertone.

However, you might not be able to tell the difference between blue/green and purple/blue, in which case it might be a neutral undertone.

For more information about veins and undertones, you can check out the in-depth Veins test onFashion Stylist’s Handbook.

And now let’s conclude the second step:

If you have a pink overtone with blue veins, you have a cool undertone. But if you have a yellow overtone with green veins, your undertone is warm. A beige overtone indicates a neutral undertone, in which case you can opt for both cool or warm hair shades. And there you have it!

Step 3: Gold or Silver?

Alright, maybe it’s not that straightforward. Another way to find out which hair colour suits you, is by looking at your jewellery. Yes, you heard that right!

This is actually a straightforward method that translates well to whether warm or cool colours are most flattering. You’ve probably already determined whether gold or silver accessories suit you best. And here you might find your answer.

If gold jewellery flatters your skin best, chances are you have warm undertones to your skin. A warm undertone blends right in with gold. Wearing silver is actually easier for both warm or cool undertones. The difference here is: silver will contrast to a warm undertone, whereas it will help illuminate cool undertones.

So.. to sum up step 3. Look for your use of jewellery. What suits your skin more? Gold or silver? Look at areas like the jawline and wristas those areas get the least amount of sun exposure.

Hair Colour Guide

Hello Blondie

Alright, let’s talk about blonde hair. We’ve probably all had a friend ask: “Would a blonde hair colour suit me?”

There’s no denying it, blonde hair is so stunning and brilliant! It’s hard not to want a blonde transformation at least once in your lifetime. It is however – as you may know – very high maintenance. For your natural dark hair, this is something to take cautionabout. If your client has naturally dark hair, this is something you must warn them about. Also, the whitening procedure can really damage the hair, so adding moisturising treatments such as the NATULIQUE Intensive Hair Maskafterwards is key.

For all the natural blondes this won’t be much of an issue however, as blonde hair is easily enhanced. You may even find that the BALANCE Sparkling Shine – which lightens up to 2 shades – will do the job. If a cooler, less yellow shade is desired, consider using the Extreme Silver Refresher. You won’t regret it!

For someone with light skin and cool undertones, going for an ashy blonde colour will illuminate your coolness, while warmer shades will make you appear pale or white. A golden blonde colour will beautifully accentuate your skin tone if you have a warm or neutral undertone. If you have a medium or dark skin colour, consider the shade of blonde in relation to your undertone especially. Consider going for a dark blonde here, as it won’t look as dramatic and will blend in more.

Brunettes Do It Better

If you want a brunette hair colour, you’re in luck! Brunette hair colours are usually the easiest to achieve and maintain.

It’s also the colour shade most likely to be flattering on anyone. You’re in for a good one!

When choosing the perfect brunette hair colour, keep in mind what we talked about in regards to skin colour – dark hair has a certain dramatic appeal, that will really stand in contrast to someone with light skin.

And if that’s the look your want – great! But if not, we advise you to opt for a lighter shade or adding highlights to brighten it up.

So to conclude on this very popular hair colour: Go for cool shades of brown if you have cool undertones to your skin – to enhance your natural appearance – and more of a warm brown if you have neutral or warm undertones.

Red Velvet Baby

Okay, so if you’re hooked on a red hair transformation (or want to tone your natural red hair), consider the tint of red in relation to skin tone. Crimson red hair can look really dramatic on someone with a light, cool skin tone, whereas a strawberry blonde will look more subtle.

Consider the look you’re going for. Don’t worry however – red or auburn hair is actually one of the more versatile shades out there.

If you have a light skin tone consider going for a more blonde shade with a twist of copper or strawberry, as it really compliments light skin.

Whether you have a warm or cool undertone, you’ll be alright here, as the hint of red will compliment a warmer tone and the base of blonde will compliment a cool skin tone. If you’re on the neutral scale, you will also fit right in.

For medium skin tones with either cool or warm undertones, you should in general steer clear of any red that contains purple, as that might make your skin appear more of a pale yellow.

For medium skin tones, consider going for something more golden and rich in colour. Rose gold is a gorgeous option that works for both lighter and darker skin tones! For dark skin tones, a rich crimson red colour will do wonders! Go full out and embrace your beautiful, rich complexion.

Black Glamour

Black hair is definitely a statement, so we get why this option seems so appealing! However, unless you’ve got naturally black hair, we generally don’t advise you to go full black, asit will be very hard to reverse the effect. But there’s no denying its both glamorous and charismatic appeal!

If going for the natural look, black hair is best suited for darker skin colours. That doesn’t mean however, that it won’t look stunning on anyone with a lighter skin colour.

Before deciding on this option, give careful consideration to both skin tone and undertone. Black hair looks naturally best on someone with a darker skin tone. If you have a light skin tone however, consider opting for a dark brunette instead to avoid looking too pale. Unless you’re going for a Dita Von Teese look!

Colour Me Blue (or Any Other Colour of the Rainbow!)

Sometimes you just need a little more – we understand! Similar to the lessons above, if you want to go for a more adventurous hair colour, keep in mind skin tone and undertone especially to find what vibrant hair colour suits you best.

Going for something like an ashy violet will do great on someone with a cool undertone, while blue shades will really stand in contrast to light skin. If that’s the desired look – by all means, go for it!

Rule of thumb here is to go for warmer shades of your chosen colour, if the skin undertone is warm – and cooler tones if there’s a cool undertone. The NATULIQUE Douce Colours are great for someone who’s keen on going for a more colourful option. You can also achieve great results by mixing these with a more natural hair colour.

What Hair Colour Suits Me (or My Client)? - NATULIQUE ® Certified Organic Beauty (10)

Alright, so let’s sum up the last part. Warmer hair shades go well with warmer undertones, and cool hair shades go well with cool undertones. Simple as that. If you go by this analysis, we guarantee you will unlock the answer to which hair colour suits you best. Lighter skin tones tend to naturally have lighter hair colours. And so if you want to enhance your natural appearance, you should have this in mind.

And there you have it! You should be well-equipped to guide yourself (or your salon client!) through the difficult task of selecting what hair colour suits you best.Remember, this is a guide and not a set of rules you must follow. Rules can be bent or broken, if necessary. Thanks for reading along!
