What are the different types of lasers? 2024 (2024)

All Epilia centres are equipped with Alexandrite lasers from Candela.

This is a conscious choice resulting from thorough research. This blog provides an overview of all of the different types of lasers and methods on the market.

How do lasers work?
Before revealing the specificities of the different lasers, let us explain how they work.

The laser targets the pigmentation of the hair (i.e. the melanin). It emits a very concentrated beam of light at a very precise wavelength. That light is converted into heat when it is absorbed by the melanin. When the pigment in the hair follicle (sac from which the hair grows) is hit, the hair and its root are destroyed, which means that it can never grow back.

The epidermis remains intact and the surrounding tissues are not damaged.

Laser hair removal is ideal for both women and men who consciously choose a simpler life.

The Alexandrite laser
Epilia chose to work with the Alexandrite laser from Candela, which is currently the world leader in the field of dermatological and aesthetic lasers.

The Alexandrite is a semi-precious stone that filters light at a wavelength of 755 nm. This wavelength corresponds to the maximum absorption peak of melanin. As a result, the light beam penetrates the hair root very precisely without needing a high level of intensity.

All scientific studies agree that the Alexandrite is currently the laser that offers the most convincing results on fair and medium skin types.

The Nd-Yag laser
Nd-Yag is the most appropriate laser for the treatment of dark skin types. This laser works at a wavelength of 1064 nm, which has a low level of absorption by melanin and therefore the light beam penetrates deeper into the hair root.

The thermal effect on the hair is low and ensures a high level of intensity. This laser is recommended for long-term hair removal on dark skin or deeply rooted hair.

The Diode Laser
The Diode Laser, which is much less efficient than the Alexandrite, has the advantage that it is cheaper and more compact. This also makes it easy to transport. The Diode operates on a wavelength from 810 to 980 nm, so it has a wider spectrum than the Alexandrite and the Nd-Yag.

This wavelength has a low level of absorption by melanin and therefore the light beam penetrates deeper into the hair root.

The lower absorption by melanin is both an advantage (tanning and skin pigmentation are not greatly affected) and a disadvantage (lighter and finer hairs resist the treatment).

Although this is a promising technique, the Diode Laser is not yet fully developed, so a lot of sessions are needed for a good result.

Are there other techniques available for permanent or long-term hair removal?
IPL technology, or Intense Pulsed Light, is often confused with laser hair removal. However, these two hair removal techniques are very different, both in terms of safety and effectiveness.

IPL
The lamps used in IPL provide less selective, less powerful and more diffused light than lasers. Since the pulsed light is much less strong it only weakens the hair follicles, and therefore cannot guarantee a permanent result.

Therefore, the results are often temporary and disappointing for the patient, and it also has a significant risk of burn marks.

… versus laser
The laser, on the other hand, emits a powerful, more selective energy beam that completely destroys the hair follicle. This makes the treatment truly permanent.

Unlike IPL, laser treatment is only carried out by specially trained medical personnel. Thanks to compulsory training, the laser procedure is a highly controlled technique and is also the subject of numerous efficiency and safety studies. Laser hair removal is the only technique that can guarantee you a permanent, safe and effective solution for unwanted hair growth.

In short…
Epilia has opted for the latest generation of state-of-the-art lasers: Alexandrite lasers from the Candela brand. This type of laser is highly efficient and guarantees permanent hair removal under optimal safety and hygiene conditions.

It is important to be well informed about the different techniques of permanent hair removal before you make your choice.

FAQs

What are the different types of lasers in lidar? ›

Airborne topographic mapping lidars generally use 1064 nm diode-pumped YAG lasers, while bathymetric (underwater depth research) systems generally use 532 nm frequency-doubled diode pumped YAG lasers because 532 nm penetrates water with much less attenuation than 1064 nm.

What are the different types of lasers in PPT? ›

- Common laser types discussed include ruby, He-Ne, argon ion, CO2, excimer, and solid-state lasers like Nd:YAG. Lasers transform light of various frequencies into a chromatic radiation that is coherent, highly intense, highly directional, and highly monochromatic.

What are the different types of laser engraving? ›

There are three types of laser engraving: etching, deep laser engraving, and laser ablation (the difference between the three is what the surface is and how much you remove) This is the most common option for people who want something personalized or customized.

What are the four classes of lasers? ›

Overview of Laser Safety Classes*

Class 2MVisible low power lasers; either collimated with large beam diameter or highly divergent
Class 3RLow power lasers

What is a type 3 laser? ›

Class 3 lasers are medium power lasers or laser systems that require control measures to prevent viewing of the direct beam.

How are lasers different? ›

The major difference between laser light and light generated by white light sources (such as a light bulb) is that laser light is monochromatic, directional and coherent.

What are four-level lasers? ›

In a four-level laser, the laser transition finishes in an initially unoccupied state F, having started in a state I, which is not the ground state. As the state F is initially unoccupied, any population in I constitutes population inversion. Thus laser action is possible if I is sufficiently metastable.

What are the three most common laser level types? ›

The most common levels are line and dot lasers, grade lasers and pipe lasers. Laser levels can be used for several reasons and should be considered a much-needed instrument for home use as well as in different industries. Uses vary from indoor applications and outdoor applications.

What is the best type of laser? ›

One of the best lasers for skin resurfacing, Fraxel Repair effectively treats deep lines and wrinkles, sunspots and age spots, uneven skin tone and texture, hyperpigmentation, scarring, and melasma. The laser is also renowned for producing long-lasting results.

What are class 5 lasers? ›

Class 5 Photonics offers ultrafast, high power laser systems and EUV sources for demanding applications from bio-imaging to ultrafast science and attosecond science.

How many types of laser tools are there? ›

The construction industry uses two types of laser detectors: line and rotary. Because line and rotary lasers work on different wavelengths, they each need to have their own detector. And all of them are color-specific.

What are the three main parts of laser engraving? ›

A laser engraving machine consists of three main parts: a laser, a controller, and a surface. The laser is a drawing tool: the beam emitted from it allows the controller to trace patterns onto the surface.

What type of laser is best for metal engraving? ›

Fiber Lasers are often considered the best laser for engraving metals such as aluminum, brass, copper, nickel, and stainless steel.

What is the most powerful type of laser? ›

What Type of Laser Is the Most Powerful? High-energy lasers (HELs) and free electron lasers (FELs) are currently delivering the highest practical power levels available from the latest state of technology development. They can both deliver coherent radiation power levels in the megawatts (MW) to gigawatts (GW) range.

What type of laser is most effective? ›

Type #1: Alexandrite

The Alexandrite laser is superior to other types of lasers because it can penetrate deep into the skin and remove hair follicles from the root. Alexandrite laser is a better alternative to Diode laser.

Which color laser is the strongest? ›

At the same photon flux… the bluer the laser the more power it puts out, and needs to run. “Blue” refers to ultraviolet and above as well as visible blue. So, at the same photon flux, gamma lasers are the most powerful.
