You know those TikToks where guys show their glow ups in two pictures? Well, there’s a 99% chance that in the second “glow up” photo, he’s got a wet mop haircut. It’s not as cringe as it sounds, promise! There’s just something about a tousled head of hair that has been associated with hot people since the dawn of time. Anyway… The wet mop hairstyle is everywhere, not just TikTok, and while the name might be drawn from the messy, piece-y look of a wet mop, it looks a lot better than the name might suggest. When you get into it, there is actually some method behind the madness.

The wet mop hairstyle can be achieved in two ways. The first is simply by growing out a classic short cut and not brushing it (Okay, maybe brush it but do not slick it back). And two, bring a picture of a young ‘90s A-lister to your hairdresser. Some stylists like to describe the wet mop hairstyle as similar to a bowl cut. But never fear, while it does have the same all around length as a bowl cut, it’s without the insanely blunt edges that make the bowl cut so severe.

Straight hair can work it too, especially if you’re willing to add in a little mouse, texturizing spray, or dry shampoo and scrunch up your ends for extra fluff. Also! It can be a full wispy bang, or just a couple of choice threads, but having some strands to smolder through is essential if you want to achieve the mysterious wet mop hairstyle.
