For your client, choosing what to have at their next nail appointment is a big decision. From browsing Instagram for inspiration, to thinking about what occasions they have over the few weeks after that their nails need to be suitable for, choosing their next nail look is no easy task.
As the nail pro, you can also play a part in advising what colour for your client to choose based on the meaning behind it.
Scratchserves up a guide to the meaning behind different colour choices on nails & how to support different causes with a simple colour overlay…
1. Red
Looking to meet the one? The ‘red nail theory’ which has gone viral on TikTok suggests that if you sport red nails, it is easier to attract men. According to Color Matters, red is the colour of love and passion which could explain the reason behind this theory. Videos tagged with the phrase ‘red nail theory’ has been viewed over 74.9 million times with people believing the reason they met their match is because they had red nails.
2. White
Forget updating your relationship status on Facebook, people can now tell whether you are single or not purely from the colour of your nails.
Creators on TikTok are painting their nails white to signify their single status as according to Urban Dictionary, white nails mean someone is ‘ready to move on; to have a fresh start.’ It also symbolises cleanliness, freshness, and simplicity.
3. Baby blue
In contrast, wearing baby blue on your nails means you are in a relationship. This concept comes from the theory that when women ask their partners what colour they should paint their nails, they always say light blue. This trend is believed to have started in 2020 when TikTok user @_urdadsgirlfriend shared a video to the platform asking “Why is it that every time you ask a boy what colour you should get your nails they say light blue?”
4. The initial trend
The latest trend to hit the nail scene is having your significant other’s initials on one or multiple of your nails, or any word of your choice. This is a way to experience the minimal tattoo trend in a non-permanent way and is a way to show what is important to you through the power of your nails.
5. #NailingDiabetes
To help raise awareness for Diabetes Awareness Month in November, Diabetes UK has set the challenge of encouraging people to paint their nails blue.
Simply choose your blue nail varnish and share your photo on social media using the hashtag #NailingDiabetes to help raise awareness.
