The 10 Biggest Haircut Trends for 2023 (2024)

There’s something transformational about a haircut. Whether you want to go for a major chop or a slight update, we’re betting that hair will take a retro turn to the ‘90s this year — just like our lug sole boots and wide leg pants. We chatted with Harry Josh, an N.Y.C.-based hair stylist and owner of the eponymous, world-famous brand, and James Rosko, the owner and lead stylist at Neon Ave Chicago, to get the inside scoop on the styles that are bound to turn heads in 2023.

Harry Josh is an N.Y.C.-based hair stylist and owner of the eponymous brand.

James Rosko is the owner and lead stylist at Neon Ave Chicago.

1. French Bob

Bobs have been considered timeless for over a century. From the flapper era to more modern takes, this version features soft bangs for added texture. “Adding bangs to a short bob gives life to a usually simple cut,” says Rosko. He adds that this looks works well for both curly and straight textures.

With face-framing layers, this looks gives you a mix of both face-framing short and longer layers. Just like a caterpillar and butterfly, the two different lengths can give you two very different looks depending on how you style your hair. Rosko says this look works best for normal to thick hair. “Maximum layers take out weight while adding volume and lift around the face,” he says.

3. The Jen 2.0

Are the ‘90s even the ‘90s without one of the most iconic haircuts of all times? The famous Jennifer Aniston-layered haircut spawned a craze at the time. “This is a modern take on that classic haircut modeled by Jennifer Aniston,” says Rosko. The key to wearing it in 2023? Keeping length and connecting layers around the face brings a classic cut to life with lift and volume for a modern-day style. “The layers of the original Jennifer Aniston cut were cut deeper into the hair which made it more choppy. Taking a smaller section around the perimeter of the face gives it a modern take with the same technique,” he says.

Sure, it seems like bangs have typically been reserved for straight or wavy styles in the past but we’re here to say curly hair can rock it too! “This is great for anyone with natural curls or those looking to embrace their texture. Bangs, when cut correctly, can be the perfect top off for a great cut on any texture and length,” says Rosko. For all curl patterns, a professional can customize these curly bangs to enhance any style from long to short hair but note, you may want to have your stylist cut your ringlets while dry, depending on your curl type. “Anything from a 2A to a 3A can be cut wet but detail work should be done dry,” says Rosko. “Curl textures 3B to 4C should be cut dry.”

5. The “It Girl” Lob

This look is ideal if you’re into a lived-in natural look. “This style has had a number of iterations over the years, but the shoulder-length cut is a great look, and makes hair easier to manage,” says Josh. “This cut is simple and effective in working with fine and unruly hair to give an effortless look with minimal styling needed,” says Rosko. To recreate the look from the salon, “create waves with either a flatiron or curling wand to create a modern edge without looking newscaster-y,” adds Josh.

Sometimes, it can be so hard to say goodbye! If you’re nervous to make a big chop but want to give your long hair a refresh, long layers may be the way to go. “Adding texture to the bottom of the cut allows the hair to lift and become more voluminous with each layer,” says Rosko. Plus, it’s one of the most versatile looks. “By keeping layers long, you have the ability to work with a number of styles, from down under your hat, to pulling it up if you get warm throughout the day,” says Josh. Keep in mind this look works best on medium-thick hair types as fine hair might look scraggly with layers.

7. The Modern Shag

Yep, we didn’t see it coming either but if you’re trying to grow out a mullet from 2022, this is the look for you. “Add in texture around the face with a heavy fringe to grow last year’s mullet out, easy and trendy,” says Rosko. Just keep in mind, “it takes a certain level of confidence and wardrobe for this haircut,” says Josh.

This is great if you want to add a little edge to your long locks, notes Rosko. This look is ideal for anyone looking to keep the length but have some face-framing layers to play with when they toss it up. “Bringing layers around the face near eyebrows and cheekbones and disconnecting the length brings a fresh and fun feel to the world of layers,” he adds.

9. Bottleneck Bob

With a signature pinch at the top of the forehead and curtain bangs, this look adds volume to a classic bob and brings attention to the eyes, says Rosko. It works best with fine to medium hair and those looking for easy maintenance as it’ll grow out without needing much TLC.

Should you or should you not get the bangs? Yeah, we’ve all been there — but just remember: Hair always grows back! If you’re afraid to commit though, this is the bang to try. “It’s the perfect bang when you want a change but are afraid to go all in,” says Rosko. He adds Birkin Bangs barely dust the forehead with wispy short strands that rest just at the brow. This look typically works best with fine hair.
