JAIPUR: The University of Rajasthan (RU) has become the leading university in the country with over 11 lakh students enrolled in the session 2013-14. RU also has 1,200 affiliated colleges (maximum) spread in eight eastern districts of Rajasthan. Data says that Pune University with 811 affiliated colleges is second, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University with 800 colleges ranked third in terms of enrolled students and affiliated colleges. The figures came after the students' examination forms enrolled in the affiliated colleges were compiled in mid-December. The ranking of RU improved with the addition of several affiliated colleges in its geographical territory. This year alone, 80 colleges were added in RU's pool. In last five years alone the university has added 400 colleges, which is by any means, highest addition of colleges in the country in the same period by any university. "RU's share in imparting higher education in the state is highest even if we put all the state and private universities together. It's a big responsibility for us to impart quality education," said Dev Swarup, vice-chancellor of RU. The six-decade university is also the biggest state university in the country in terms 28,000 students on the campus. Very few universities in the country have students' strength crossing 20,000. Other state universities like Maharashi Dayanand Saraswati (MDS), Ajmer has 600 students, Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU), Udaipur has 2,500 students, Kota University has 100 and Jai Narayan Vyas University, Jodhpur has 4,000 students.
The University of Rajasthan has 37 post graduate departments and 12 centres of excellence including unique first-of-its-kind in the country Centre for Converging Technology along with premier centres like Gandhian Studies and South Asian centers drawing students from across the country. The university was accorded the status of 'potential for excellence' by the University Grants Commission (UGC) which indicates the university has potential in all the sectors. The university has students enrolled from all states in the PhD programmes which also indicates the quality research work. The university is spread in districts like Jaipur, Dausa, Sawai Madhopur, Sikar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Jhunjhunu and Churu.
