Everywhere you look right now, it's clear: bangs are in. After the strong resurgence of curtain bangs, we've seen countless fringe styles pop up. Birkin bangs, micro bangs, and now, on the heels of the popular butterfly cut, you can expect to see "butterfly fringe" everywhere this year.

The bangs haircut is a top contender for seasonal hair changes. "I'm doing a lot of haircuts on clients that are growing out of their shorter lengths," celebrity hairstylist Brendnetta Ashley says in a trend report by BlondMe. The butterfly fringe came about as a solution for people growing out their curtain bangs.

Much like the butterfly haircut, butterfly bangs are all about blending varying lengths of hair. The haircut itself features short layers around the crown of the head, giving the illusion of shorter hair, meanwhile, the fringe uses layers around the face to achieve a feathery look.

What Are Butterfly Bangs?

"A butterfly fringe is a layered fringe that is feathered," Ashley tells POPSUGAR. "It resembles butterfly wings, thus the name behind it." This cut creates a lot of movement in the hair.

Though this type of bangs is flattering on all hair types, if you really want to see the feathered layers in the cut, Ashley recommends styling it a particular way. "To truly see the effect of the butterfly fringe, this look is great for hair that is styled and smoothed out — so straight to a soft wave," she says, much like curtain bangs.

How to Style Butterfly Bangs

When you style your butterfly bangs, start with a heat protectant spray, like the BlondMe Wonders Glaze Mist ($21) and grab a medium round brush. "As you blow dry, keep your brush diagonal in the direction that you want the fringe to lay," says Ashley. "The round brush will give the volume you want in your fringe. Directing the fringe diagonally will leave you with the feathered look."
