The Process
Typically, the hair that goes into wigs was grown out on purpose. It is undamaged, untreated hair and can come in close to $100 per ounce (this explains some of the cost of the finished product). Blonde hair ranks the highest in cost.
India and China are famous for their virgin hair. Some people in India grow and then cut their hair for religious ceremonies. The temples where they perform these ceremonies sell the hair.
Some hair is donated for specific causes, like chemotherapy patients or those with alopecia. Organizations that make these wigs accept undyed, even length hair bundled from donors.
Before becoming a wig, the hair is thoroughly cleaned, including in acetic acid solutions if necessary. A wig maker arranges the hairs in the right direction. Washing may be done by hand. Drying occurs at high temperatures, over 200 degrees Fahrenheit, or simply out in the air.
The hair can now be styled into a permanent curl, wave, or straightened hairdo. It may be dyed a specific color.
The hairs are then knotted into the base of the wig. The base is made of fabric and is often lace or mesh at the front. Individual hairs are arranged in such a way as to give the hair a natural look as it would have on the scalp.
Then the wig is finished and ready to be styled and worn.
Could Wigs Hurt You?
There are minor dangers associated with wig wearing that customers should be aware of. One is the pressure you may feel on your head from a too-tight wig. If you do have hair under your wig, make sure you treat it well.
- Cover it with something that will not put pressure on your hairline.
- Line your wig. Don’t let your hair be damaged by a rough wig.
- Dry your hair before putting your wig on to stay hygienic.
- Give your scalp and hair a break without the wig.
