IPL is a fast and effective hair removal treatment on black and brown hair.

The Lumenis IPL Hair Removal treatment is generally administered in a series of four to six sessions that yield excellent long-term results. IPL hair removal treatments are safe and non-invasive. Immediately after treatment, some slight redness or swelling of the treated area may be experienced, indicating the follicles have responded to treatment. Although you should be able to resume normal activities, you will be advised to avoid direct sunlight and apply sun-screen for a few days following treatment.

How IPL Works

IPL Hair Reduction (2)

The Lumenis IPL Hair Removal system is an advanced IPL technology which delivers intense pulses of light with integrated cooling to ensure maximum comfort.

IPL Hair Reduction technology applies highly controlled pulses of light to the treated area. This light is selectively absorbed by the hair follicles beneath the skin surface. The absorbed light heats the hair follicles, damaging the re-growth potential of the follicle – all without damaging the surrounding tissue. Prior to treatment, the hair in the area to be treated is shaved and a cold gel is applied. As the pulses of light are applied to the skin, a slight stinging or warm sensation is felt. The hair in the treated area will shed over the next few weeks.

IPL or Electrolysis?

IPL and Laser are fast, gentle and effective hair removal technologies. Skin Chemistry may recommend IPL/Laser treatments on particular areas of hair growth. However, we have found that IPL/Laser on hormonal areas such as chin, under chin, sides of face, neck and breasts can cause a rebound effect on hair growth. Initial treatments will reduce hair growth. However, after time new growth can appear due to dormant follicles being stimulated by the light and heat induced during treatment. In our experience we’ve found electrolysis produces much better results in these hormonal areas. Meanwhile, IPL/Laser treatment is highly effective for the right skin and hair type on non-hormonal areas such as legs, arms, underarms and bikini line.

IPL and Laser treatments target pigment in the hair itself to destroy the hair follicle, which means its effectiveness will depend on hair colour. The darker the hair colour the more successful the treatment. If the hair is fair or grey there is no target for the light to be attracted to, leading to poor results. Skin colour is also important. Fairer skin types gain faster results than darker skin. Electrolysis on the other hand is completely independent on pigment colour of hair or skin and can therefore be applied to any area of the face or body.

Your Skin Chemistry specialist will fully assess and advise you on the most suitable hair removal treatment.
