Ombré nails are a trendy nail design and in today’s blog post I will be giving step by step guide on how to achieve ombré nails design with gel polish using a unique method.

What is an Ombré Nail Design?

This is a manicure design that implies you created a colour gradient. It usually starts off with the lighter colour and then blends in perfectly with the darker colour at the tip of your nails.

How to do Ombré Nails With a Sponge

There are a few ways to do this but we are focusing on the sponge method. It is important to note that with this method, opaque gel polish should be used. Things you will need that will help with how to do ombré nails with gel polish include two opaque gel polishes, a tape, makeup wedge sponge, base coat, and top coat.

  • Prep your nails, remove the shine.
  • Pick the colours that you will be using for your ombré design.
  • Use a peel off tape as a barrier for easy clean up. You could also use regular tapes as an alternative.
  • Apply base coat and then cure for 60 seconds.
  • Use the lighter colour as your base colour.
  • Use a makeup wedge sponge and apply gel polish on it. Don’t put too much on it just put enough.
  • Dab the sponge with nail polish on your nails gently for an ombré effect (as seen in the video).
  • The gel polish transfers to your nails creating the ombré effect. But at the first dab, it might not be really noticeable. Ensure you cure your nails for sixty seconds after every application of gel polish.
  • Apply gel polish on the sponge again and then dab on nails. (dab the sponge on nails about three to four times until you are happy with the visibility of the ombré effect).
  • For every application of gel polish, cure your nails.
  • Dab a few times and you should be good.
  • Remove barrier and then apply top coat.
  • Cure your nails one last time.
  • Repeat the steps for all ten finger nails.

Do(s) and Don’t(s)

  • Do not apply too much gel polish on the sponge as it will smear and the application will not be even.
  • Do not use really soft sponges.
  • Do scrape off excess gel polish with a toothpick or sponge the excess gel polish onto a piece of paper before sponging onto nails.
  • Do not move your sponge too much, stay within the speculated area.
  • Do not place your barrier on your actual nails as it can stain.
  • Do wait for a layer to completely dry before sponging the next layer of gel polish.
    Don’t sponge when the gel polish is still thick.
  • Do not over sponge your nails as you don’t want the sponge particles to ruin your design.

How to do Ombré Nails Without a Sponge

If you do not have a sponge in sight you can still get do an ombré design. You will need two opaque gel polishes, a tape, cotton bud, base coat, and top coat.

  • Prep your nails, remove the shine.
  • Pick the colours that you will be using for your ombré design.
  • Use a peel off tape as a barrier for easy clean up.
  • Apply base coat and then cure for 60 seconds.
  • Apply a base colour, using the lighter colour as your base colour.
  • Dab your cotton bud into the darker colour and start pressing it on the tip of your nails, starting from the middle till you get to the tip of your nails.
  • Repeat this procedure on all ten nails.
  • Cure your nails for sixty seconds.
  • Apply top coat.
  • And then cure for the last time.

Viola, there you have your ombré design without the use of a sponge.
