Is Hellmann's classic burger sauce like Big Mac sauce? ›

Big Mac sauce and Great Value Secret Sauce are nearly identical in terms of ingredients.

Not quite. While internet forums and social media might have you believe Big Mac sauce is just a fancier Thousand Island dressing, McDonald's special burger sauce does not contain tomato sauce, and has a tangier flavour profile.

You'll get the sweetness from the relish, the tang from the ketchup, a kick from the mustard, and some smokiness from smoked paprika or chipotle powder. The mayo kind of brings it all together!

The sauce goes really well on everything. It has a smokey tang from the BBQ and mustard sauce that makes it perfect for dipping tater tots of fries, or to slather on a burger.

They say the tangy taste of mayo compliments the flavors of the meat and cheeses. Because it's not as overpowering, it means the rest of the burger is elevated. With at least 15 types of mayonnaise, there are so many options to choose from.

The answer is no… but they are similar. Both of the condiments have a creamy consistency and include sweet pickle relish. But, McDonald's Big Mac Sauce includes vinegar and has a bit more pickle relish in it than Thousand Island dressing.

Because of similarities in color and taste, many people assume that In-N-Out's burger sauce is simply Thousand Island dressing, i.e. a blend of mayonnaise and ketchup. However, Thousand Island has a thicker consistency and is slightly spicier than In-N-Out sauce.

Starting April 27, Big Mac sauce is available in sauce cups (think the barbecue, sweet and sour, or honey mustard containers that come with your McNuggets). That means you can dip any sandwich, fries, hashbrowns, or, what the heck, even an apple pie, directly into a well of Big Mac sauce to your heart's content.

In 2018, McDonald's revamped the sauce by removing potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, and calcium disodium EDTA. The sauce is occasionally available for purchase on its own for a limited time. The first time was in 2015. A 25 ml (0.85 U.S. fl oz) tube was available for purchase but only in restaurants in Australia.

"The [sauce] that best replicated Big Mac sauce from McDonald's that you should go buy if you want it is Great Value's 'Secret Sauce,'" he told his burger followers. "Look at the ingredients statement, it's almost identical."

He deduced that the secret sauce is made by combining 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon of ketchup, and 2 teaspoons of pickle relish, a splash of vinegar, and a pinch of sugar. Not only is its secret sauce compared to Thousand Island, but also McDonald's famous Big Mac sauce.

It turns out that despite tasting similar to Thousand Island dressing, ketchup is nowhere to be found in Big Mac sauce. Instead, the sauce gets its peachy-pink color from a dash of paprika, and signature creamy tang from a combination of mayo, mustard, and relish.
