However, the high school and town in itself lacks both racial and cultural diversity and appreciation which I believe would sincerely enrich the school system and be paramount to student attitude and behavior. 7. #17 Best High Schools for Athletes in MassachusettsFranklin High SchoolFranklin Public Schools, MA·9-12·Rating 3.84 out of 5 395 reviewsJunior: Franklin was a great place to live. We had a new building, lively sports culture, high-achieving academics, clubs filled with a sense of community, and thriving arts programs. Those came to a halt when a town property tax override failed to pass. A large number of teachers across the district were cut, we lost a multitude of electives, and sports fees will increase tremendously ($1000 for football and hockey for example). It has been a devastating blow to many students who found solace in extracurricular programing. Many alumni relied on these activities for college admissions, scholarships, and maintaining a sense of belonging in the difficult time that is high school. That being said many students take AP exams and score relatively well. What I would love to see is an increase in the school budget, however that isn't something solely school administration is responsible for. We need for engagement from families and citizens because our education and enrichment demands it.... 8. #18 Best High Schools for Athletes in MassachusettsMinnechaug Regional High SchoolHampden-Wilbraham Regional School District, MA·9-12·Rating 3.99 out of 5 263 reviewsSenior: Thanks to Minnechaug's safe and welcoming environment, students are allowed to experience situations out of their comfort zones. When I first started at Minnechaug, due to covid, I lost touch with my friends and didn't have many people I could trust. Now, I have a loyal group of friends who do everything together. The downside to this heavy inclusiveness, unlike other regional high schools in the Massachusetts area, there isn't a separate Junior and Senior prom. I say this especially because the homecoming fails to meet the formalities and fun of a dress coded theme. The school effectively brings all four grades together; however, this often results in a lack of unity within the grades themselves. Despite the criticism, Minnechaug succeeds in its goal, it constantly encourages students to go "all in". Those in this community strive to graduate with a wide social network, a pocket full of opportunities through a variety of clubs and a high bar of expectations.... It is what you make of it, as most things in life are. One of the things I would like to see a change in is just the overall building. It feels very old, no carpets, not much life, just bland and boring. I would also like to see a change to the food as it is definitely not the greatest. I have had mostly a good experience with teachers and students. Although I think some teachers need to help their students better as each one struggles with a different thing, and no two people are the same. Such as new or different teaching strategies. I think the school spirit is amazing, especially on game nights and we even recently started a Mansfield morning news which was pretty funny. All in all I think this is definitely one of the best high schools that you could possibly attend in the area, and no school is better than the other, it is really just what you make of your experience there.... The school is safe and located close to the center of town, yet not out in the open. The school offers many different classes and a wide variety of subjects with various skill levels. For example, there are many different business classes, science classes, and art classes. The teachers are friendly and knowledgeable in the different classes they teach. Some of the best parts are the many different activities you can be a part of as well as different opportunities like science fairs. They have opportunities that appeal to very academic students, artistic students, athletic students, and those who fall in between. They make an effort to provide a welcoming environment for everyone. However, there is less diversity due to Billerica being more of a rural town. The building can sometimes seem soulless because the interior can be attuned to a highly modern correctional facility.... I was part of the TMHS Girls JV and Varsity Soccer team throughout all 4 years and was voted a Senior Captain. I loved to attend the sports matches and games that we had during each season and we have a very successful athletic program with amazing staff. As well as multiple opportunities within the school from a widespread choice of clubs and extracurriculars. I never really had a bad experience in high school but I would love to see the dynamic between students be better. This school has amazing funding, but I strongly believe that the mental health resources at the middle school level are lacking. The fact that there isn't much of a guidance counselor's department at the middle school made opening up about my severe mental health issues difficult. The culture here isn't great either. I am a Southeast Asian hailing from Roxbury--20 miles away from this suburb--and much of the gossip, toxicity, and elitism at this high school was shocking. A lot of the children (mostly white and east asian) here fail to realize they can use their privilege and power as a tool, so they go off to elite universities without much intent to make positive social change. Although, I do believe Wayland is still great despite its flaws. I have loved the teachers and friends here who welcomed me in without a second thought.... 19. #33 Best High Schools for Athletes in MassachusettsNorth Andover High SchoolNorth Andover Public Schools, MA·9-12·Rating 3.78 out of 5 206 reviewsSenior: I’m glad to be a part of the North Andover community and satisfied with most of the teachers. Personally I have found great teachers and staff I can talk to when having a hard time in class, or even a hard time socially. The lunch menu at North Andover has improved over the past year, and has many more options now! I also enjoy being part of the extra curricular activities at North Andover High, such as managing the wrestling team! North Andover High is a great school to meet new people and get to know yourself and find a place you belong in. Something I would change about NA High is implementing something more significant for students to do during Advisory class. The time set aside for that class could be used in a better way to help students, especially regarding their future when it comes to plans after high school. Another thing that could be changed is better handling of students being late/absent. Sometimes detentions are given unfairly, and things could be handled differently.... Although many people are divided into their own groups, most of the people are very kind and allow you to join. I think what makes Algonquin special is their sports and clubs. There is so much spirit and I’d say it’s mainly due to their sports and the enthusiasm and support given by everyone. Furthermore, in terms of clubs, there are just so many that it can be difficult to choose. A lot of different backgrounds are considered such as the Asian Culture Club. Lastly, having moved here by Junior Year, I have just felt so much collaboration in terms of events. Recently, there was a carnival just before the seniors left and it was amazing. I forgot to mention, seniors get out early and don’t have to take finals if they got an A-/A/A+ in the class. I thought it was really kind of the school. My school just got rebuilt so it is very nice on the inside and out although there can be fights between students or conflict here and there. The faculty isn't much help long term wise because nothing has changed with the fighting but they do treat everyone equally with disciplinary actions. Some things I love about it is all the informational assemblies that my school puts on for us to get ready and go out into the real world after high school and the involvement with each grade class like senior sunrise and senior sunset or promoting fundraisers for each grade like prom, homecoming etc.. One thing I would change is the hot lunch we get, even though we do get a good variety of foods (wraps, pizza, salad, burgers, and hot lunch), our hot lunch is the most popular and it can sometimes turn out to be uncooked or raw or have a deceiving smell to it.... I have found passion in business through the DECA club, found my voice on the diversity council alongside my vice principal, and have forged strong friendships through sports like cross country and track. Although the school lacks diversity and often doesn't have much school spirit, as a whole my experience has been extremely positive. Some of the teachers are amazing and I would genuinely like to keep in touch with them after I graduate because they have created such a positive impact on my life. On the flip side, there are definitely some teachers who are not the best and who have hindered my experience. For me, teachers and administrators have always been very receptive and generous whenever I need help. I was a freshman during the pandemic, and I believe the school adapted to these changes pretty well, and the transition back into in-person learning was smooth. This school has many opportunities in the arts, which is a highlight for me. I was able to participate in Playwriting Club, Improv Club, Theater productions, and take many good art classes. I know that the band program is also very good. Students are encouraged to participate in sports, clubs, or even make their own clubs. This past year there have been a lot of changes that Administration have created, such as removing and slowly reintroducing Senior Privilege and changing the schedule.
